Athletic Bilbao to honor world champions at San Mamés

Athletic Bilbao will pay tribute to its three World Cup winners, Unai Simón, Aymeric Laporte, and Nico Williams, at San Mamés on August 22 before their match against Sevilla. The club has organized a triple tribute to recognize their achievement in the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

What happened with the civic tribute?

The City Council of Bilbao, led by Mayor Jonan Aburto, decided not to hold a civic tribute for the World Cup winners. However, Athletic Bilbao has taken the initiative to recognize its players at its stadium, where they will also pay homage to legendary goalkeeper Carmelo Cedrún, who recently passed away.

Who will be recognized?

In addition to Simón, Laporte, and Williams, Spain coach and former Athletic player Luis de la Fuente will be honored in the VIP box. The Under-19 European champions Elene Gurtubay and Ziara Vega, coached by former Athletic manager David Aznar, will also be recognized.

Why is this important for Athletic Bilbao?

This tribute reinforces Athletic Bilbao's legacy as a talent-developing club. The three World Cup winners were all developed in the club's youth system, highlighting its significance in Spanish and global football. The match against Sevilla will be an opportunity to celebrate this historic achievement.
