Athletic Bilbao has signed Álex Albistegi to Edin Terzic's coaching staff on a two-year deal. The Burgos B coach will help the German adapt to Spanish football and the club's unique philosophy. Albistegi, 38, joins Terzic's team after being informed by Diario de Burgos that he was close to joining the club. He decided to take the step after Burgos asked him to continue after the team's relegation to Tercera RFEF. Athletic Bilbao was looking for a coach with a national license and good English skills, which Albistegi possesses. The offer arrived over a month ago, and the club's size was decisive. After retiring in 2021, Albistegi began training in Burgos' youth academy. In 2022, he took charge of the team and led them from Tercera Federación to Segunda RFEF. Formed in Eibar's youth academy, Albistegi made his debut in Primera División with Real Sociedad in 2010 under Martín Lasarte, replacing Asier Illarramendi. He then played for UD Logroñés, Real Unión, Toledo, Lleida, Reus, Mirandés, Unionistas, Burgos, and Sestao. Albistegi joins Terzic's team, who will arrive in Lezama with his assistant Sebastian Geppert, as well as an analyst and a physical trainer. The new group aims to revitalize a disappointing Athletic Bilbao from last season. Preseason will begin in early July in Lezama with a packed schedule of friendly matches. Terzic prefers to focus most of the work in the sports city and add only short trips for the matches, a plan similar to the recent approach of Ernesto Valverde.
