Who is Athletic Bilbao's new head coach?
Athletic Bilbao announced on July 7, 2026 the appointment of Edin Terzić as its new manager. The official press conference took place at San Mamés, where Terzić explained that he accepted the role because of the club’s identity and its tradition of promoting young talent. At 44, the German arrives after a successful season with Borussia Dortmund, where he also worked with the youth squad.
Why did Terzić choose Athletic Bilbao?
Terzić highlighted that the Basque project lets him “work with academy players and keep a distinct playing philosophy”. He noted that, unlike other offers, here “you feel a culture that values internal development”. The coach recalled his time at Dortmund’s academy, where he discovered several players now starring in the Bundesliga, and said that approach fits perfectly with the policy of signing only players born or trained in the Basque Country.
What are his expectations for the upcoming season?
During the press briefing, Terzić stated his immediate goal is “to regain a strong league position and chase European spots again”. He added he will aim for an attacking style while preserving the defensive solidity that defines the Lions. Moreover, he promised playing time for Athletic Club’s youngsters, such as Iker Muniain (now a veteran serving as mentor) and promising academy graduates already training with the first team.
How did fans and the board react?
Present members applauded Terzić’s vision and his commitment to the club’s identity. President Aitor Elizegi remarked that “having a coach who understands our philosophy is a key step forward”. On social media, supporters expressed excitement, using the hashtag #TerzićInBilbao to show their backing. Local media already label the hiring as “a strategic move that strengthens Athletic’s continuity”.
What comes next?
The first official training session is set for July 12, when the squad will gather at Lezama’s training centre. Terzić plans a pre‑season that mixes friendly matches against Spanish sides and a few international opponents, aiming to fine‑tune tactics and assess the youngsters. Any future signings, if needed, will focus on bolstering the defence and adding creativity to midfield, always respecting the Basque‑only recruitment policy.
